Episode 1: Pilot (Here She Comes)

The 'Pilot' is the official name of any first episode of a series. It sets up the location, the principal characters and even gets those characters through their first bit of trouble. With that in mind, let's jump right in.

Bill- A strapping young man of 25. He is tall, with blond hair, and blue eyes. Quiet and thoughtful, with a charming and flirtatious side, Bill longs to be a writer, a change from his initial passion in life: acting. Bill is a full-time student at a college in Chicago, and also works full-time writing for a small, local web company. It pays the bills, but it's not really what he wants to do. In addition to his writing, Bill plays guitar and wishes desperately that he could sing. However, that doesn't keep him awake at night.

Sally- A buxom, beautiful 24 year old, with short dark hair and brown eyes. She stands slightly shorter than Bill. Sally is an actress, having met Bill in a theater company they were in together last year. A talented and accomplished singer, and a Magna Cum Laude graduate of her university, Sally also has the ability to draw beautifully. She can pinpoint the heart of a matter with ease, and her intelligence, sense of humor, and passion for life made Bill a sucker for her charms. The two have been dating for more than a year.

Our story takes place in the bustling metropolis of Chicago. Bill and Sally live in separate apartments, where most of the action (suitable for television and otherwise) takes place. The gorgeous lakefront and sophisticated urban setting, a city that's large but still small enough to bump into the 'guest-star' of the week, makes the third largest city in the nation a perfect backdrop for this story of love, pain, romance and laughter.

Sitcom Tip #1: There are only three stories: Someone arrives. Someone leaves. Andwell, the third one escapes me at the moment (school is starting again soon, thankfully). But today's entry focuses on an arrival: Betty. She is The Ex. (cue Scary Music)

Yes, Betty is back in town. She was away for a while, in Springfield, Illinois, working on an internship. But, she's back now, and she wants a piece of Bill's life. Of course, Sally isn't too happy, and Bill, even though he still likes her as a friend and wants to saty in touch...well, let's just say he wishes that her internship wasn't over yet. So, as the episode gets into full swing, Betty calls Bill and pretty much DEMANDS he do something with her friday night. Now, when something is DEMANDED of Bill, his first instinct pretty much is to resist. And so he does, telling Betty that he will e-mail her the next day, hoping to buy some time while he thinks of an adequate lie. Bill is working a lot of OT this week, and would rather spend friday night with Sally. Especially since he has to go out of town all day Saturday with his mom to see some relatives he didn't even know were still alive. Anyway, what will happen? Are Betty's motives pure? Will Bill come up with a believable lie to spare Betty's feelings, or tell her the truth? Will Sally be angry no matter what happens? She might be. Stay tuned to this space for the exciting conclusion!

I'd love to hear what you think so far. I mean it. Your feedback and correspondence keeps me going. If you like it, let me know. If you hate it, tell me. Knowing that I'm not writing for a vacuum really keeps me energized and turning out good stuff. So, please, write to me! I'll be doing some fine tuning in the coming days as I refresh my HTML, so stay tuned.
