Other Sudden Fiction

Sudden Fiction, inspired by the GreatG, his best example of which can be read here.

There was no way Jack was going to see that fucking Kangaroo movie. No fucking way. But he let his mom take him out of school that day, with no explanation offered to the principle, who let Jack go because he knew.

And when the previews were over, and the movie started, Jack was suddenly grateful, because this would be two hours less of freshman year to be endured, one less eigth period math class to take, and maybe, just maybe, a little less time spent thinking about why there had to be cancer, and why it had to be his dad that got it, and why it was his mom who, just nineteen days ago (just nineteen days!) had to give the doctors permission to disable the life support and hold her husband's hand as his face turned blue and he suffocated right in front of her.

The movie ended, and it was way too bright outside. It should have been dark by now.

"Did you like it, Jack?" she said. "Kangaroos were your favorite."

And they went through the KFC drive-thru on the way home, and it was good because the kitchen smelled like fresh cooking again for the first time in what felt like ages, but they forgot to give them the honey packets they asked for which neither of them mentioned because neither of them talked, letting the small, black and white kitchen television talk for them as it showed them wedding videos of brides that tripped and fell and fathers that accidentally hit themselves in their heads with golf clubs.

Later, when it was truly dark, Jack went to bed, and through his closet door, underneath his big blue backpack from grade school, intentionally half-hidden inside a white plastic bag during a fit of sudden sixth grade self consciousness, was Mr. 'Roo, and Jack didn't need to look because he knew he was there.
